Nick is Professor of Management at the University of Edinburgh Business School, where he served as Dean of the Business School from 2007 to 2012. Prior to that he spent 14 years at the Judge Business School, Cambridge, seven at Cardiff Business School and four at the Open University. Nick’s research focuses on identifying and understanding the characteristics of effective organisations. He is co-author of “The Japanization of British Industry” (1992), which examined the transfer of Japanese management practices to the UK. Nick’s research has covered a range of topics, including employee ownership and commitment and lean methods and their impact on performance, particularly in the car industry. He has led several international benchmarking studies in Japan, Europe, North America and China. Nick’s current research is looking at the resilience of teams, organisations and supply chains and how these can withstand challenging conditions and recover quickly from trauma.
Nick is co-director of the Edinburgh Strategic Resilience Initiative, a cross-disciplinary programme based at the University of Edinburgh Business School.
